Scott's View: Remembering our TopVet Award Recipient; Veteran of the Year Award

This week, I want to take a moment to remember a recipient of our TopVet Award for Bruce Whitman who recently passed away. Bruce was an Air Force Veteran and a great supporter of Veterans Advantage. It's been a bittersweet time for us, as we mourn his loss. In addition to his CEO position at Flight Safety International, Bruce was Chairman Emeritus of the Medal of Honor Foundation and served on the Metropolitan USO Board. We celebrate his lifelong commitment to veterans advocacy and know he will be missed dearly by all of us who are his fellow veterans, colleagues, and family.

Scott's View: We Honor the Service of Our Vietnam Veterans on “National Vietnam War Veterans Day”

I was pleased to see the DoD recognize my fellow Vietnam Veterans with a wreath-laying ceremony at The Vietnam War Memorial today. It sets the stage for a weekend of “Welcome Home” tributes for a generation of war veterans that never received recognition for their service and sacrifice to our country, many of whom are still dealing with the aftershocks and consequences of that war.

Scott's View: Philly POPS Salute Military and First Responders with Free Christmas Concert

Last Friday, December 1st, Lin and I were lucky enough to attend the Philly POPS annual holiday benefit concert I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders, as guests of HeroVet Chuck Widger (hyperlink to Chuck’s profile) and his spouse Barbara. For the fourth year, the 65-piece POPS orchestra kicked off it’s Christmas concert season by hosting free tickets for 2,000 members of the military, veterans, police and fire departments, and their families.

Scott's View: Thoughts on Las Vegas Shootings and Invictus Games 2017

With eyes turned to our homeland and the safety of our citizens, our thoughts and prayers remain in Las Vegas for the shooting victims and their families. Additionally, and as it relates to you, the safety and our national security should be our top priority, and that means our trust and gratitude for the first responders and military who are called to perform in emergency situations and keep the peace.

Scott's View: What the Army Birthday and Flag Day Mean to Vets

June is a busy time of year for so many of our members. This week, in particular, is a double-feature week. For starters, this week marks the 242nd anniversary of the United States Army which was established June 14, 1775. I am reminded of my own Army service during the Vietnam War, memories that rekindle the pride I felt serving our country. To our active duty currently in uniform and all the veterans who have served in the Army, we salute you. Happy Birthday to the U.S. Army!

Scott's View: Memorial Day Reflections

As the bombing in Manchester, England proved earlier this week, the peace and safety of a nation is precious and, many times, underappreciated... until they are gone. This Memorial Day weekend, we call on all our members to recognize and acknowledge those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.  Take time this holiday weekend to reach out to the families you know who have lost loved ones in service to our country. They need to know that their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten and that we are eternally grateful to them.

Scott's View: Don Rickles Represented Golden Era for Entertainment and Celebrities Who Served

Highlighting the passing of comedian and Navy vet Don Rickles and several of his old pals from the famed "Rat Pack" no doubt will prompt a "Wow, I did not know they were vets!" reaction from our readers. As many from my generation will remember, service was so pervasive at a time when the country was knee deep in international conflict - between WWII, Korea, and Vietnam - over the course of three decades.
