Vet News: DVA Secretary Principi Green-Lights Chiropractic Care for America's Veteran

Washington, DC - The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) commended Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Secretary Anthony Principi for issuing an historic and far-reaching blueprint for formalizing the full inclusion of chiropractic care into the massive Veterans health care system in the United States. Secretary Principi’s decision today to implement more than three dozen recommendations made by a multi-disciplinary health care advisory panel will dramatically improve the quality of care available to millions of Veterans in the U.S. and increase access to chiropractic care for every veteran who wants or needs to see a doctor of chiropractic. The Secretary’s bold action originated with legislative directives from Congress in 2002 and 2003 - passed at the urging of the ACA, the ACC and America’s Veterans - to establish a permanent chiropractic benefit through the DVA system and authorize the DVA to hire and employ doctors of chiropractic as care providers.

Vet News: Survey Finds Increasing Health Costs for Retirees and Continued Erosion of Benefits

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In a new survey of some of the largest U.S. employers -- conducted prior to passage of the new Medicare prescription drug legislation -- 10% say they eliminated subsidized health benefits for future retirees in the past year, while 20% say they are likely to terminate retiree health coverage for future retirees in the next three years. These changes primarily affect new hires, rather than current retirees. The study also finds that 71% of surveyed firms increased retiree contributions to premiums in the past year, and 86% plan to increase such contributions within the next three years. The survey of large, private-sector employers was conducted and analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Hewitt Associates."Based on current trends, we can expect that fewer retirees will have health coverage in the future and those who do will be paying more for their health care," said Drew Altman, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Kaiser Family Foundation.
