Scott's View: Veterans Advantage HeroVet - Louis Zamperini

Louis Zamperini

Our most recent HeroVet is Army Veteran Louis Zamperini. I was hoping to meet Zamperini last month where he was due to appear for a speaking engagement near our home. Unfortunately, he arrived dehydrated from a red-eye flight from LA and ended up in the local hospital for a few days!

Friend and fellow Olympian John Naber, a 4-time gold medalist swimmer, spoke in his place. There was not a dry eye in the house, as John recounted personal memories and stories of the indefatigable Zamperini. This is an extraordinary story of service, sacrifice and personal redemption.

Louis Zamperini defied the odds to survive at sea in the Pacific and as a Japanese prisoner of war in WWII. His true heroism, however, came afterwards, as he fought and successfully conquered the emotional demons of a horrific war experience. Today, he inspires a new generation with his story of resilience, persistence and bravery.

In the storied annals of military history, there are tales that transcend time, serving as reminders of the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage of those who wear the uniform. One such narrative unfolded in the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, where Retired U.S. Army Maj. Larry Moores etched his name into the annals of valor, culminating in a long-overdue recognition with the Silver Star Medal.

Cover Story: How & Why WeSalute Was Founded 25 Years Ago

WeSalute founders Scott and Lin Higgins have spent a lifetime in the military community, from Scott’s combat service in Vietnam and the service of Lin’s father in WWII, to serving families and veterans through the creation of memorials and parades as part of charitable and government initiatives. It was this lifetime of service that led them to establish WeSalute, originally founded as Veterans Advantage, and to continue giving back.
