WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA) presented U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) with its Advocate of the Year award in recognition of his work for veterans, their families, and their survivors.  NASDVA honored Akaka with the award this morning following a Joint Hearing of the House and Senate Committees on Veterans' Affairs.

"All of us at NASDVA appreciate the tireless service and commitment of Chairman Akaka.  This proud Hawaiian son is relentless in his advocacy for our Veterans," said Terry Schow, NASDVA President and State Director of Veterans Affairs for Utah.

"It is a great honor to be recognized by a group of public servants who are striving to help veterans on a state-by-state basis.  They know well the challenges we have overcome and the work still in progress.  I am grateful for this honor and look forward to continuing our shared advocacy," said Akaka, Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee and a veteran of World War II.

Cover Story: How & Why WeSalute Was Founded 25 Years Ago

WeSalute founders Scott and Lin Higgins have spent a lifetime in the military community, from Scott’s combat service in Vietnam and the service of Lin’s father in WWII, to serving families and veterans through the creation of memorials and parades as part of charitable and government initiatives.
