Scott's View: Tell Us About Your Personal Kit When You Served

New York Historical Society

The New York Historical Society (NYHS) – one of the country’s leading historical museums, in the heart of New York City -- is in the planning stages of a comprehensive exhibition about the Vietnam War. And they would like your help with this exciting project.

The NYHS wants to get it right when it comes to representing the experience of American service personnel (of all branches) in the Vietnam theater of operations. We want to offer your feedback to make sure they have it right.

So, they have asked me to ask you:

What items of your personal kit would you say absolutely MUST be on display at this type of exhibition?

What are the physical things that best represent what it meant to be there for you?

Here are some examples of the kinds of things we thought of for the Vietnam era:

Dog tags
A P-38 can opener
A rucksack
M-16
Helmet
Foot powder
Combat boots
Canteen
Vietnam Service Award medal
PRC-25 radio

The list of potential items is endless...Be sure to make your suggestions. Thanks!

Cover Story: How & Why WeSalute Was Founded 25 Years Ago

WeSalute founders Scott and Lin Higgins have spent a lifetime in the military community, from Scott’s combat service in Vietnam and the service of Lin’s father in WWII, to serving families and veterans through the creation of memorials and parades as part of charitable and government initiatives. It was this lifetime of service that led them to establish WeSalute, originally founded as Veterans Advantage, and to continue giving back.
