Scott's View: The True Meaning of Military Appreciation Month

Scott's View

When Veterans Advantage pioneered to create everyday discounts for Veterans, military, and their families nearly 20 years ago, it was a real challenge! While there were special offers for older Americans, motorists and students, there were virtually none for military and Veterans. Some companies had no idea why they should do it in the first place! But, we were committed to creating greater respect, recognition and rewards for those who serve and wouldn’t take “no”for an answer from any company! Today, as we approach Memorial Day, we look back and, while we still have much work to do, we realize we’ve made a lot of progress. Partnerships to reward those who have served and continue to serve and sacrifice with a benefit or discount which we call a A Real Thank You, is something companies are now proud of. Our Cover Story helps you navigate the complexities of many “military discounts” -- and remember, our partners have created your exclusive everyday discounts to recognize your and your family’s military service. They deserve your loyalty.

Among the several days recognizing our military this month, today is a very special one. Today is National Military Spouse Appreciation Day! At Veterans Advantage, we believe that when one family member serves, the whole family serves. Upon deployment of a family member, a spouse is the anchor for the family to stay together and keep it going. It’s a tremendous responsibility and obligation. If you know a spouse of one who is serving or deployed, let them know how much you appreciate all they are doing in service and sacrifice on behalf of their loved one and this nation.

Cover Story: Women's History Month Wrapup

To honor Women’s History Month, we want to recognize the significant contributions women have made to the military over the last two centuries. Though women found ways to serve in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, it wasn’t until June 1948 that President Harry S. Truman signed the Women's Armed Service Integration Act, allowing women to receive regular permanent status in the armed forces. Today, women make up about 17% of the military and 9.4% of the veteran population.
