Scott's View: Iwo Jima and the Importance of Military History

Scott's View

I was a history major in college, and like me, you may be fascinated by military history. Last week, we marked the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most important battles of World War II, memorialized in the iconic photo of our U.S. Marines planting the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi. As we look back, we are reminded that time is running out for our World War II veterans. Please make the effort to seek out one in your community. Ask them about their service and thank them for helping to keep us free. You'll make their day!

Finally, as Black History Month comes to a close, we salute HeroVet Jonathan Woodson, MD. Our Veterans Advantage HeroVet award is awarded to recognize military veterans who continue their ‘selfless service’ by making a difference in our society and in our communities.

We first met Dr. Woodson a couple of years ago and were struck by his tireless dedication to his fellow veterans, especially from a health perspective, as an educator, philanthropist and as an Army reservist. He truly reflects our military values of "selfless service, honor, integrity, and respect."

In the storied annals of military history, there are tales that transcend time, serving as reminders of the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage of those who wear the uniform. One such narrative unfolded in the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, where Retired U.S. Army Maj. Larry Moores etched his name into the annals of valor, culminating in a long-overdue recognition with the Silver Star Medal.

Cover Story: How & Why WeSalute Was Founded 25 Years Ago

WeSalute founders Scott and Lin Higgins have spent a lifetime in the military community, from Scott’s combat service in Vietnam and the service of Lin’s father in WWII, to serving families and veterans through the creation of memorials and parades as part of charitable and government initiatives. It was this lifetime of service that led them to establish WeSalute, originally founded as Veterans Advantage, and to continue giving back.
