Independence Day 2020: A Time to Come Together

Scott's View

This Independence Day is a difficult one for all of us and our country. We face a pandemic that is not going away. Many of us have lost loved ones. Parades and our important celebrations that fill our lives with the meaning of our country have been cancelled.  We face an uncertain and challenging economic future.

I find that reflecting on how our founding fathers fought to create our country 244 years ago provides some perspective on the tough times we are experiencing today. They faced great obstacles. In 1776.  It took unbound courage and determination to break with England and an indomitable King, and to build an independent country.

A focus on Ben Franklin’s stark warning to his fellow revolutionaries about the risks of breaking with the crown, continues to provide us an astute warning about how important it is to work together:

“We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

No one should underestimate the strength of the American people. If we come together with this common cause of healing our nation from the pandemic, we will certainly prevail as a country.

From all of us on the Veterans Advantage team, we wish you and your family a happy and safe Independence Day!

Cover Story: How & Why WeSalute Was Founded 25 Years Ago

WeSalute founders Scott and Lin Higgins have spent a lifetime in the military community, from Scott’s combat service in Vietnam and the service of Lin’s father in WWII, to serving families and veterans through the creation of memorials and parades as part of charitable and government initiatives. It was this lifetime of service that led them to establish WeSalute, originally founded as Veterans Advantage, and to continue giving back.
