Veterans Advantage once again honored the military and veteran community this month with events and member benefits as part of the fifth-annual Veterans Week NYC 2016.

On Friday, November 11, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio – along with retired Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs, kicked off Veterans Day celebrations at the Mayor’s home, Gracie Mansion. They honored all who served through the largest Veterans Day Parade and related events in the country. Veterans Advantage was proud once again to be a participant.

Veterans Advantage founders Lin and Scott Higgins represented VA and its sponsors at the Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony before the parade on 11/11/2016, and at all Veterans Week events. Veterans Advantage is an honored guest at these events and is proud to represent its sponsors.

Veterans Advantage float offers a special "Thank You" from its sponsors: Avis Budget Group, Northrop Grumman Corporation, and Verizon Fios.

The opening ceremony for this year’s parade took place at the Eternal Light Monument near the start of the parade route. Organizers marked the 15th anniversary of 9/11, naming three Grand Marshalls and veterans who were also first responders to the New York City “Ground Zero” area on 9/11/2001. In attendance were hundreds of VIPs, government officials and leaders in the veterans community, and they were moved by the words of Paul W. Bucha, a Medal of Honor recipient and Veterans Advantage Advisory Board member.

This year, he gave a stirring tribute to the American Flag [Video]:

“It is our nation’s shroud. It has covered the casket of every soldier, airman, Marine, Coast Guardsman and sailor who has returned back to this land having given the final price,” he said.

VETERANS ADVANTAGE EVENTS
With three key events highlighting the week, Veterans Advantage and its 2016 sponsors treated VetRewards Card members, VIPs, and fellow veterans and their families to a weekend of memories celebrating service.

“We want to thank those who serve and continue to serve for protecting and preserving the freedoms we enjoy today. They remind us that every day should be Veterans Day,” said Scott Higgins, Veterans Advantage Founder and CEO, and a Vietnam Veteran.

Starting with the annual Veterans Day parade on 11/11, Veterans Advantage’s float traveled up New York’s historic Fifth Avenue amid the cheers of spectators showing their support of the 25,000 participants.

After the parade, Veterans Advantage and IMAX hosted parade-goers to a free IMAX movie screening of “Sully,” starring Tom Hanks, which chronicled the heroic water landing of a US Airways jet by Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate and veteran. The screening took place close to where the world-famous event took place, on the west side of Manhattan, in the Hudson River.

In addition to the free screening, IMAX graciously provided free food, drink, and gifts.

“We are pleased to be able to host this Veterans Day screening and work with Veterans Advantage again to honor those who have so faithfully served our country,” said IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond.

Later that weekend, Veterans Advantage hosted its fifth-annual “Heroes Meet Heroes,” event uniting U.S. Military Veterans with U.S. Olympians and World Championship athletes. Higgins welcomed the attendees, followed by two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Donna de Varona and Veterans Advantage Advisory Board member as Master of Ceremonies, and a special address by MOH recipient Paul Bucha.

“Our nation’s veterans and Olympians are such a rich source of inspiration for all Americans, and we are grateful that Northrop Grumman has stepped up to help us recognize them,” said Veterans Advantage co-founder Lin Higgins, who conceived of the idea for “Heroes Meet Heroes” five years ago.

VETERANS ADVANTAGE DEALS AND GIVEAWAYS
Veterans Advantage gave away gift bags and door prizes at the screening, and complimentary meals at “Heroes Meet Heroes.”

Free Veterans Advantage member plans were also provided to New York City veterans during Veterans Week, including City University of New York (CUNY) Student Veterans, as underwritten by Verizon Fios.

Finally, military, veterans and their families were welcomed with a special 50% holiday discount to enroll in Veterans Advantage. All Veterans Advantage members could extend their member plan at 50% off for long-term member savings.
