are some of the most frequently asked questions
about getting a Veterans Advantage Card. Click
on any question for your answer.
What
are the Veterans Advantage Benefits?
The
Veterans Advantage Card Program was launched on
February 19th, 2001 and provides new benefits
as a reward for service from our partners. Veterans
and their families receive their benefits online
through our member website and our partners websites,
and off-line in benefit partner locations.
We
currently have partner benefits from Amtrak, Dell
Computer, Hertz, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget,
National Car Rental, Working Advantage, for entertainment
discounts, iDine, for restaurant discounts, Airborne
Express for shipping, and discounts at The Golf
Warehouse.
Veterans
Advantage is proud to deliver a free prescription
discount card to every member in the Veterans
Advantage Program. When joining Veterans Advantage,
you are automatically enrolled in the Veterans
Advantage Prescription Plan which is provided
free of charge and covers the entire family.
The Veterans Advantage Prescription Plan has the
potential to save you hundreds of dollars a year.
The Plan enables Veterans Advantage members, who
might normally pay full cash price for prescriptions,
or have a high co-pays with their current insurance,
to obtain significant savings on both generic
and brand name drugs including oral contraceptives.
The available savings are up to 65%, when compared
to regular retail prices. The price for a prescription
is frequently less than the typical co-payment
of many insurance plans.
When
you join Veterans Advantage, you will receive
both the Veterans Advantage Veteran Card or Family
Card, and the Veterans Advantage Prescription
Card. You may use your benefits off-line at partner
locations, on partner web sites, or through their
toll-free numbers. You will also be given access
to our Members Only area of our web site,
which is password protected and requires your
member ID to enter. Members Only contains
all the discount codes and information you need
to receive your benefits. It also contains an
exclusive Veterans Advantage online handbook of
information about the many Federal and State benefits
you are entitled to.
All
members receive our free bi-monthly e-newsletter
for updates on new benefits and important Web
site information. From our home page you may access
shopping benefits, which provide a donation to
the Veterans Advantage Foundation, profiles of
fellow veterans, and weekly updates concerning
Veteran benefits and news.
How
can I get the special Veterans Advantage codes
required to access my Veterans Advantage Card
discounts?
These
codes are only available for Veterans Advantage
Cardholders. They may be found on the front and
the back of the Veterans Advantage Card or in
the Member Only area of our website. To access
the Members Only area, you must enter your member
ID and the password you selected when you joined
the Program. If you have forgotten your password,
you may send a request from the password required
entry page and we would email you your password.
In
addition, you may call us for help at 1-866-VetAssist
(1-866-838-2774). We standby to help you during
normal business hours, Monday through Friday,
9am 5pm, EST. You may either listen to
our automated VetAssist line to receive an answer
to your question, or dial -0- for live assistance.
Am
I eligible to apply for a Veterans Advantage Card?
Veterans
Advantage issues "Veterans Cards" to
recognize those who have served and "Family
Cards" to the Veteran's family members. To
qualify for a Veterans Advantage Veterans Card,
you need to have served in any branch of military
service and received a discharge other than dishonorable.
We
accept those who have served at any time and in
the any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army,
Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard. National
Guard, Reserves, Active Military, US Public Health
Service and Retired Military are also eligible
to apply for the card.
Family
members may qualify for a Veterans Advantage Family
Card if an immediate family member served: spouse,
father, mother, son, or daughter.
When
will my Veterans Advantage Card renew?
Renewals
are automatic as a convenience feature for our
members. Automatic renewal would allow you to
receive their new cards on a timely basis with
no interruption of benefits. Veterans Advantage
will always e-mail a notice to its cardholders
prior to their renewal dates. Accounts are renewed
at the same term as the original enrollment (i.e.
one-year or three-year).
What
are the benefits Amtrak is providing for Veterans?
Amtrak
provides Veterans a 15% Everyday Savings discount
through the Veterans Advantage Card Program plus
special promotions delivered throughout the year.
With
over 500 destinations to choose from, Amtrak can
take you to visit friends or family. Attend a
Veteran's reunion. Or just enjoy America close-up.
Click here for a full description of this very
special offer.
The
Amtrak benefit for 15% Everyday Savings is off
the lowest available Standard Coach Rail Fare.
Veterans Advantage Cardholders should identify
themselves as such when booking a ticket and provide
their unique Travel Discount Code to the
reservation agent. Veterans must also present
their Veterans Advantage Card, plus another form
of government-issued ID with picture identification,
such as a valid drivers license, when purchasing
tickets at the ticket counter and traveling on
the train. See More from Amtrak
The
Veterans Advantage 15% Everyday Savings
on Amtrak has the following special benefits:
- No
Advance Purchase is required with your 15 %
Everyday Savings. You may travel at any
time with no advance purchase restrictions or
blackout dates.
- Metroliner
service is eligible for the 15% Everyday Savings
discount for non-peak hours, weekdays and anytime
weekends
(except peak hours of the weekday).
- All
Acela Regionals are eligible for the 15% Everyday
Savings discount (Acela Express service
is not available for Veterans Advantage discounts).
- Your
15% Everyday Savings is off the lowest available
fare at any point in time.
Other Amtrak discounts may be off the published
fares. So be sure to compare. Other discounts
may end up being less than the 15% Everyday
Savings for Veterans Advantage if it is off
the higher published standard rail fares.
- There
are no peak travel restrictions with your Veterans
Advantage 15% Everyday Savings.
This benefit is available everyday and at any
time of the day. The only exception is Metroliners
in the Northeast Corridor, which are available
on non-peak Weekdays and anytime weekends (just
no peak weekday.)
- No
Blackout periods. Other Amtrak discounts
or promotions usually have blackout periods,
daily or seasonal peak restrictions or are available
only for limited times during the year.
- There
is always seating availability with your Veterans
Advantage 15 % Everyday Savings discount
(as long as the train is not sold out). Amtrak
does not limit the number of seats available
to Veterans Advantage member. Amtrak does limit
the number of seats available for most other
discount offerings, so you may not get your
time or date preference with those other offerings
that are not Veterans Advantage discounts.
- You
may receive your 15% Everyday Savings on your
coach rail fare,
and upgrade your ticket by purchasing an accommodation
fare (first or business class, or sleeping car).
The Amtrak accommodations fares
are not discounted. Upgrades to business class
or sleeping car service are available upon payment
of the full accommodation charge, but your coach
rail fare portion of your itinerary will still
receive the 15% Everyday Savings discount.
- Auto
Train 10% Vehicle Discount. Veterans Advantage
members are eligible for 10% savings on their
cars or motorcycles aboard the AutoTrain between
Lorton, VA and Sanford, Florida Stations.
For
travel on Amtrak, how do I enter my Veterans Advantage
membership number when I book online?
Veterans
Advantage members can make reservations online
by following these steps: On the Train Availability
page, select Veterans Advantage from the fare
type selection box. Then, in the Membership Discount
Number box on the Billing page, enter your 10-digit
Travel Discount Code from your Veterans Advantage membership
card. Do not enter any spaces or dashes.
Can a widow receive the Amtrak
discount?
If your spouse served in the United States Military,
you are entitled to a Veterans Advantage Family
Card. This card has all the Veteran Card benefits
with the exception of Amtrak. Amtrak is not providing
the train travel benefit to the Veteran family
members. The Veteran must purchase the tickets
and be the person traveling.
Can
the Veterans Advantage Amtrak Discount be combined
with my senior discount or other Amtrak discounts?
No,
the Veterans Advantage discount cannot be combined
with the senior discount. In some cases, Veterans
Advantage members may combine the 15% Everyday
Savings discount with other Amtrak special promotions,
when specified.
See More from Amtrak
Your
Veterans Advantage discount may provide other
benefits for you than these discounts. We have
listed them below, so you may compare:
- Auto
Train 10% vehicle discount
- Metroliner
(except peak weekday) is available at non-peak
hours
weekdays and anytime weekends.
- Acela
Regionals
- Your
15% Everyday Savings is off the lowest available
fare at any point in time.
Other Amtrak discounts, such as the senior discount,
are usually off the published fares only. So
be sure to compare. A larger discount on the
published fare may end up giving you less in
savings than the Veterans Advantage 15% Everyday
Savings discount if it is off a much higher
fare.
- Veterans
Advantage provides the Veterans Advantage 15%
Everyday Savings benefit year around and there
is no peak season or peak time travel restrictions.
The benefits are available everyday and at any
time of the day. The only exception is the Northeast
Corridors Metroliner, where weekday peak
travel is excluded. Other Amtrak promotions
have daily or seasonal peak restrictions, require
advance purchase, or are available only for
limited periods of time during the year.
- There
is always seating availability with your Veterans
Advantage Amtrak discount
(as long as the train is not sold out). Amtrak
usually limits the number of seats available
for their other discount offerings, so you may
not get your time or date preference with those
offerings.
I
am a member of AAA, so how is the Veterans Advantage
discount different?
The Veterans Advantage 15% Everyday Savings delivers
a bigger discount that AAAs.
Can
I get cards for my spouse or other family?
Yes, as a Veteran Card member or Family Card member
of Veterans Advantage, you may get additional
cards on your account for your immediate family
members (up to four household dependents). These
additional cards must be shipped to the same address
as the primary cardholder. Your family members
can only be enrolled as Family Card members, not
as Veteran Card members. There is a small charge
of $4.95 for each additional Family Card.
If
the other member of your family is also a Veteran,
they need to apply for their own Veterans Advantage
Veteran Card membership. Family Card members
are eligible for all the benefits of the Veterans
Advantage Program, EXCEPT AMTRAK BENEFITS. Amtrak
benefits are only for a Veteran who purchases
the Veterans Advantage Veteran Card, and not Family
Card members. The Veteran must purchase the tickets
and be the one traveling. Please note that children
(up to 16yrs) traveling on Amtrak are always eligible
for a 50% discount when accompanied by an adult.
Amtrak is planning on adding Family Card benefits
at a later date. Family Card members are eligible
for all other great savings available through
the Program.
Can
I pay by check or money order?
If
you must pay by cash, please send a money order
only. We do not accept personal checks for payment.
If
you mail us your application or payment, you will
need to add an additional $5.00 handling fee to
your order. Please also expect an additional 2
