US Veterans & Active Military Say It’s Time for America to Reinstate the Draft

Greenwich, CT,
September 11, 2006

Five Years after 9/11, It’s Time for All Americans to “Shoulder the Burdens of War,” According to Members of Veterans Advantage Nationwide

U.S. military and veterans overwhelmingly support the reinstitution of the draft, according to Veterans Advantage (www.veteransadvantage.com), the leading nationwide membership benefit program for U.S. Active Duty military, Veterans, National Guard and Reserve and their families.

In a survey conducted over the last 10 days, Veterans Advantage members across the nation approve of supplying our all-volunteer military with fresh support via the draft, because “We should all share in the burden.”

“By a two to one majority (68% to 32%), our members feel our volunteer military has been taxed long enough,” said H. Scott Higgins, founder and president of Veterans Advantage.

“What’s also interesting is that this sentiment is uniformly strong across all generations, from our youngest veterans to our oldest. Even a majority of our members from the Vietnam generation, a period when the draft was very unpopular,” believe it should be reinstated, added Higgins, a former Army Lieutenant who served in Vietnam.

“We should re-implement the draft and bring our reserves back home to guard our homefront and our borders! As it was and should be!” said Malcolm Hess, a Veterans Advantage member, who is also a 100% service-disabled Vietnam Veteran. “The primary goal of any government should be the protection of its citizens. This burden should not be borne by one per cent of the population,” said Wayne Paulson, an Army veteran from the Korean conflict.

In the past, Veterans Advantage members have expressed their concerns about issues facing our country during wartime. In June, they supported the release of “United 93,” the first of the major 9/11 movies to re-enact the attacks on America, as well as the release of “World Trade Center,” as a tribute to brave Americans who saved lives on that day. Veterans Advantage members believe it is not too soon for all of us to remember this tragedy and that we must deal with the hard issues of the war on terror.
