Rolling Thunder Inc. will hold its 21st annual Memorial Day weekend demonstration May 23-25, 2008, in Washington, D.C., in support of POW/MIA and Veterans’ issues.
This year’s event will be especially meaningful in light of the recovery of the remains of Iraq war POW SSgt. Keith "Matt" Maupin in late March. Working on issues for current and future Veterans and for POWs and MIAs from all wars is the core mission of Rolling Thunder chapters nationwide. The event, which drew more than 850,000 participants and spectators in 2007, according to Rolling Thunder National estimates, is expected to draw even larger numbers this year.
Rolling Thunder will host and honor the families of SSgt. Matt Maupin, as well as Pvt. Byron W. Fouty and Sgt. Alex R. Jimenez both captured May 12, 2007. In addition, former Congressman Bill Hendon (R-NC), co-author of An Enormous Crime, an account of abandoned American POWs/MIAs in Southeast Asia, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker for Sunday’s program at the Lincoln Memorial. Highlights of the formal program are listed below.
Friday, May 23
Saturday, May 24
Sunday, May 25 - Gathering in Pentagon parking lots (Army Navy Dr. & Fern St.), followed by the traditional demonstration motorcade/ride through the city of Washington, ending at the Lincoln Memorial, where speakers and musical tributes by Gordon Painter, Paulette Carlson, and The Vettz round out the event.
