Honoring Frank Buckles, Our Last Surviving WWI Veteran Leaves Us

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Frank Buckles, the last surviving soldier from WWI (out of nearly 5 million who served in the U.S. Military) died last week at the age of 110. With Frank’s passing, we witness the end of an era. In the last several years, Buckles, frail physically, but with a sharp mind, campaigned for a national memorial to recognize those who served in that war.

As we are engaged to two major conflicts today, our Reserve forces continue to shoulder a heavy burden. More than 800,000 have been mobilized since 9/11 and more than a quarter of a million have experienced multiple deployments. As Frank Buckles reminds us, be sure to keep the servicemen and women who are serving and sacrificing in far-away lands, in your thoughts and prayers.

Remember Pearl Harbor: 69 Years Ago This Week

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

This week marks the 69th anniversary of Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941), the attacks on our Hawaiian homeland soil, where over 2,000 brave Americans serving our military perished and prompted our full involvement in World War II.

Please take a moment to thank one who has served in World War II, or honor all those in uniform from 1941-1945 who are no longer with us. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates less than 2 million of the original 16-million-plus Americans who served are alive today, and projects the number should be halved by 2014.

Just a few of those Veterans Advantage has chosen to honor over the years include:

And as President Obama said in an official Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day proclamation:

The Allied Forces battled the scourge of tyranny and ultimately spread the transformative march of freedom. As we recognize the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II this year, we honor not only those who gave their lives that December day, but also all those in uniform who travelled to distant theaters of war to halt the progression of totalitarianism and hate. In honor of all who have borne the cost of battle throughout America’s history, let us pledge to meet our debt of honor and uphold the ideals they fought to preserve.

Air Force Veteran and NY Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

It is with profound sadness that we have just learned that Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s died this morning at the age of 80. Steinbrenner, a Veteran of the US Air Force, had been principal owner of the Yankees since 1973.

A devoutly patriotic man and past chairman of the US Olympic Committee Foundation, whose birthday is on Independence Day, he and his team have been strong supporters of all who serve for many years. News of his passing just crossed the wires this morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Steinbrenner and Yankee families. He served with distinction in so many ways.

Father’s Day Reflections: This Sunday, Think of the Dads Serving Our Country

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, founder of Give an Hour and our Contributing Editor offers her own Father’s Day thanks, not just through the eyes of a therapist specializing in helping the military, but also as the daughter of a WWII Vet.

Celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday, June 20. And say a prayer for those fathers serving their country in harm’s way, who cannot share this day with their families.
