Memorial Day Wishes

Friday, May 27th, 2011

This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer – and all the leisure and fun that comes with it – but speaking to a fellow Veteran at an event this week honoring Vietnam Veterans, we agreed how this is the one time of year when it is difficult to wish someone a “Happy Holiday.”

Memorial Day is a time we should be offering our most sincere thoughts and solemn promise to honor the service and sacrifice of those who serve, and to ensure that those who made the ultimate sacrifice did not do so in vain. We, all Veterans, have paid a price in one form or another to serve our country, and this is the time to reflect on that while giving room in our hearts for healing and optimism about a future of better tomorrows.

May we all have a restful Memorial Day weekend — in mind, body and spirit.

Military Moms: Let’s Thank Them Every Day

Monday, May 16th, 2011

More in our ongoing focus on Military Appreciation Month. Fans of our Veterans Advantage Facebook page noticed an interesting discussion during Mother’s Day weekend from a military mom saying there should be more acknowledgement of the unique support that is required of them. And as perfect timing would have it, our contributing editor Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen wrote a fitting tribute to these special moms all across America.

Her advice — let’s make sure every day is Mother’s Day. As Dr. Van Dahlen says in her current piece on VeteransAdvantage.com:

Those of us who know a military mom or two will attest to the fact that these women rarely seek attention or recognition. Women who join our armed forces, marry into the military, or raise children who choose to serve are unlikely to show the strain they experience or the worry they feel. And they are unlikely to complain—even if we think that they have good reason to. These mothers are proud of the role they play in our military community.

Celebrate Amtrak on National Train Day: May 7, 2011

Friday, May 6th, 2011

We issued a press release this week celebrating National Train Day on Saturday, May 7. We are giving special recognition to our Veterans Advantage discount partnership with Amtrak, which was established in 2001.

Like Vice President Biden and thousands of Veterans Advantage members, I am a big fan of riding the rails. I’ve spoken to many of you over the last 10 years who are just as loyal to riding Amtrak with your Veterans Advantage Card. If you served our military, or are currently serving, and haven’t tried our 15% discount program yet, I encourage you to give it a look and enroll today!

Today is an Important Day and 9/11 Reminder

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Today is an important day. The operational takedown of Osama Bin Laden has reminded us how important it is to recognize those who serve. We salute the team that executed this extraordinary operation and the entire military that has performed exceptionally over the last ten years. We will always remember 9/11 and pay tribute to the men, women, and children who lost their lives on that day.
