Veterans Advantage Visits OfficeMax To Honor Its CEO Sam Duncan

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

We stopped by Sam Duncan’s office last week in Naperville, Illinois to present him with a TopVet award. Sam is an extraordinary American success story, rising from humble beginnings to CEO of OfficeMax, a Fortune 500 company. Sam married early, proudly served in the Army, and applied those lessons learned to his life and business.

Read Sam Duncan’s Profile. He has transformed OfficeMax from a struggling office supplier to a successful enterprise, a family of 35,000 associates, generating more than $7 billion in revenue. With his wife of 40 years, he is the proud father of three daughters and three grandsons. This Fathers Day, Veterans Advantage honors Sam.

Father’s Day Reflections: This Sunday, Think of the Dads Serving Our Country

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, founder of Give an Hour and our Contributing Editor offers her own Father’s Day thanks, not just through the eyes of a therapist specializing in helping the military, but also as the daughter of a WWII Vet.

Celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday, June 20. And say a prayer for those fathers serving their country in harm’s way, who cannot share this day with their families.

General Petraeus Honored At Intrepid Gala

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

It was great having the opportunity to see General David Petraeus and his lovely wife last month at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s “Salute to Freedom Award” on the legendary aircraft carrier on Manhattan’s West side. Lin and I were guests of Al Giordano of the Wounded Warrior Project. We sat with Joanne Fried of U-Haul and her staff, who are big supporters of injured soldiers. Joanne’s new son is named Tillman after the Arizona Cardinal who gave his life in Afghanistan.

Petraeus was introduced by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who turned a spry 87 that day. He gave an acceptance speech that pulled at your heart. For his speech, he chose to honor three special soldiers under his command who endured battlefield injuries, two of whom, through guts and determination, have successfully returned to active duty. Afterward, we had a chance to talk. Bottom line, we’re very fortunate to have General David Petraeus in service to our country. He carries with him the best qualities of leadership and ethics.

This week, we designated the General a “TopRank.” Check out General David Petraeus profile.
