New Benefits: Sports and Recreation, Thanks To Major Retailers

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Unless you are out west, where there are still some really tough blizzard conditions, you are starting to catch the first whiffs of spring. With that, we wanted to shift coverage to warm weather conditions. First off, our VetFamily award of the week goes to New York Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira. He’s at the top of his game, and credits his Navy pilot dad and his mom, for instilling him the important values in life, leading to his outspoken stance against steroid use. Hats off to Mark!

And for you weekend warriors, we are proud to announce great discounts from the major sports & recreation retailers in the industry. Through special online links, you can get between 15% and 20% off from big names such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sports Authority. As any active person knows, the selection from these providers is awesome, and includes all the big name brands and top-notch gear. Stock up and enjoy yourself this spring and summer!

Stop-Loss News

Friday, March 27th, 2009

We are delighted with the DoD’s recent decision to phase out the stop-loss program that has extended enlistment contracts for over 160,000 active duty troops since 2001. This was intended as a short-term measure that has gone on for far too long. It is a major victory for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and for their families. In addition, there are provisions to pay them something for their overtime.

March Is Women’s History Month

Friday, March 13th, 2009

There’s no better way to recognize and acknowledge Women’s History Month than to honor the women who have worn the uniform of our country. This March, we honor an extraordinary woman, Brig. Gen. Wilma Vaught. We honor her for her work in creating the Women In Military Service For America Memorial, and in raising awareness of the contributions of America’s female service members.

Thankfully, servicewomen and their spouses are getting the attention of the White House, as First Lady Michelle Obama has made the needs of military families her chief priority. Multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan have created special needs and challenges for our military families that we cannot ignore. We are hopeful this new administration can work with the private sector to begin to address them.

With one eye on your finances, this week’s newsletter highlights some major monthly expenses and how you can cut them with Veterans Advantage. We offer deep discounts on your prescription drugs, your health club membership, your contact lens supply, and your cell phone bill. Be sure to take advantage of these benefits of membership!
